Trip Details
The day begins with a hearty brunch at The Pancake Café in Fitchburg, known for its cozy atmosphere and mouthwatering breakfast favorites — the perfect fuel for the adventures ahead. Next, we head to Cave of the Mounds, a National Natural Landmark, where a guided tour winds through stunning crystal formations deep underground. After the cave tour, step outside for a Karst Topography Guided Hike, where you’ll learn about the fascinating geology that shapes this unique landscape. On our way home, we’ll sweeten the day with a stop at Sassy Cow Creamery for fresh dairy treats and local goodies.
Cave of the Mounds is one of the Midwest’s most celebrated natural wonders — a National Natural Landmark tucked beneath the rolling hills of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. Discovered in 1939 during quarry blasting, the cave is filled with extraordinary crystal formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and colorful mineral deposits that have been forming for millions of years. The guided tour and Karst Topography hike make for an educational and awe-inspiring experience that is genuinely unlike anything else in the region.
